BRAZENLY LUCID... IT’S ABOUT THE WINE YOUR SOURCE FOR WINE INFORMATION
View Article  2007 MCKINLEY SPRINGS BOMBING RANGE RED ... $14.99

I am a huge fan of Mckinley Springs wine promoting the crap out of the syrah which I feel is right up there with one of my long time favorites... Ex Umbris from Owen Roe.

Bombing Range Red is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Syrah, 8% Mouvedre, 3% Petite Verdot and a 1% splash of Malbec. This is a true "Kitchen Sink" blend that delivers way more then the kitchen sink. At first the nose is closed somewhat with some dusty tannins and dark cherries. As the wine airs out the aromas intensify too dark fruits and hits of black licorice. If you are a big Amarone fan as I am, you are going to love this little gem. Sweet tannins, black licorice, and ripe black currant notes fill the palate in a very Amaronish way. (Not sure if that is a word, but hopefully you get the idea). This is an intense wine that only gets richer as it breathes. This wine is drier on the finish then it is on the front and mid-palate which is a nice side to the wine and it lingers very for some time on the palate.

Amarone typically sells for over fifty bucks, so if you are in the mood for an intense wine like that but do not want to fork out those major bones, this wine could fit the bill for you. During the month of July they are letting this baby go for a meagerly ten bucks a bottle. That is a sick price for such a good bottle of wine, and you would be crazy to pass it up... I'm just saying. Cheers!   Stan The Wine Man

I really should have commented on this wine three months ago since I have been enjoying it immensely and finished off my last bottle recently. The 2008 Owen Roe "Sinister Hand" is one of the most outstanding examples of a Rhone style wine out of Washington State that I have experienced in some time. 62% Grenache 35% Syrah and 3% Mouvedre this wine is silky and concentrated. The nose is smokey and dark with some nice minerality and perfume notes. When this baby hits your mouth you know you are in for a treat. Plums, boysenberry, smoke and hints of bacon fat wrap around your palate and do not want to go away. There is a slight freshness to this wine so it does not get too heavy on the palate but the finish is persistent leaving hits of charcoal, toast and black plums. I am not sure if words can help anyone appreciate how good this wine is, but my advice to you is go to your local bottle shop and search out as many bottles of this that you can get your hands on. Not only is it an outstanding value at twenty bucks, it will be perfect for grilled foods this summer. There is not a whole lot of this around so do your best to find some. Good luck!  94 points
View Article  2009 TERRAPIN CELLARS PINOT GRIS, WILLAMETTE VALLEY OREGON... $9.99
I have been on an anti pinot grigio kick lately so you may be surprised to read this glowing review. As you all know, pinot grigio and pinot gris are made from the same grape and it is more of a stylistic moniker then anything. Pinot grigio tends to be a little leaner and crisp in style whereas pinot gris shows more viscosity and deeper fruit notes, sometimes even displaying some smoke and honey tones. Wine makers will label their wine either pinot gris or pinot grigio depending on the style in which the wine is made. The reason I have been anti pinot grigio lately is simply because I do not find them that interesting and I cannot believe how long this trend for more pinot grigio has lasted. Every time I turn around, someone is asking me where the pinot grigio is! Although made from the same grape, pinot gris is quite a bit more interesting. Another side to pinot gris is that in most cases it is more expensive then it's fraternal twin. Welcome Tarrapin Cellars pinot gris. For a mere ten bucks I believe you will be quite impressed  by what you get. Very fragrant on the nose with notes of white peaches and mandarin oranges. The palate is amazing with a nice creamy feel while notes of peaches, papaya and mangoes fill the palate yet remain delicate on the finish. This wine is serious business and could easily pass for a higher priced wine. This is going to be my summer white this year as it will be great for the deck or with salmon, shellfish, salad, halibut, or chicken. There is even enough ripe fruit on this to match it up with Asian fare. Needless to say, I love this wine and I would encourage you to get your hands on some, give it a try and see if you concur.   94 points
View Article  2007 ROOTS RUN DEEP WINERY EDUCATED GUESS CHARDONNAY...$15.99
Hopefully all my readers know that my palate goes just about anywhere a good wine can be found. I have no particular style that is my favorite although I try to find a wine that fits my craving at the time I am drinking it. Take chardonnay for instance. I have heard many folks say quite adamantly  they do not like big goopy over-oak chardonnay. Fair enough, but I feel that there is a time and place for this style. Instead of that big bowl of butter pecan vanilla ice cream, why not a glass of big goopy oaked chardonnay? It is probably a little healthier for you and you will find it quite satisfying. What I try to look for in recommending chardonnay is what I call a good cross-over wine. Another words, a chard that plays both sides of the spectrum. Good acid, some butter notes with hints of oak that allows the fruit to project itself. A chardonnay that is good with food but also will be quite satisfying all by itself.  A chard that has a lot of oak needs food... A fatty piece of chicken or some fettuccine in cream sauce. The same is true of a fat buttery chardonnay. To be solo a chardonnay has to have the acid that allows it to finish clean leaving you refreshed, unless of course you want some comfort chardonnay like a big bowl of ice cream.
I would like to introduce you to Educated Guess Chardonnay. This wine is 100% Napa Valley fruit, 85% from Oak Knoll and 15% from Mt. Veeder. This wine sees 50% barrel fermentation and 50% steel. This is one of the best cross-over wines I have run across in some time. Holding the line as a creamy rich chard (This wine went through 50% malolactic fermentation) it also shows some excellent acid to fruit balance. A beam of acidity drives the fruit flavors through the mid-palate to the finish. This wine also has a sexy nose of tropical fruits and buttery toast. In fact, when I first smelled this wine I was sure I was going to get a goopy butterball... it didn't happen. Yes there is some butter, there is some oak but there is also loads of fresh tropical fruit notes including pineapple, melon and guava. The finish is clean and does not stick to your palate but has excellent length. This my friends is a chardonnay that will please the oak palate as well as the palate craving a cleaner style or even the one looking for a little more fruit. If you are a buttered popcorn chard lover, this would even satisfy your craving although not to the hedonistic extent some can. Overall, I highly recommend this wine to a large number of palates and I can guarantee you it will be a regular at my table.  90 points.  Stan The Wine Man

2004 Mount Baker Vineyards Reserve Syrah Yakima Valley...

I have to let you in on a little secret that I am front paging so that it will not be a secret anymore. Randy Finley, owner and mostly winemaker at Mount Baker Vineyards has temporarily slashed the price of his reserve syrah from twenty-four bucks to thirteen bucks and I kid you not, it is a deal that you should not pass up. This puppy is huge, and has at least five years of life left in it. Even now it is a smok'in good wine. The nose explodes with smoke and bright blueberries. There is a beef jerky aspect that is there with tiny hints of vanilla. Once this wine hits your lips, you know you are in for a treat. This baby has some backbone with excellent balance of acidity and fruit. Hints of smoke, bacon fat, cassis, blueberries and blackberries fill your senses on a large scale. This wine is P2 (Palate squared). Massive is a good word for it with some tannic grip on the sides of your mouth and an incredibly long finish. This wine is a teenager that acts like a business tycoon. I would be disappointed in anyone who likes syrah that does not take advantage of the price being offered. I am going to jump all over this one and will make sure the store has plenty in stock.   94 points

View Article  2008 TERRE ANTICHE MONTEPULCIANO D' ABRUZZO ... 6.99

Not to be confused with Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano made from a clone of sangiovese called prugnolo and is grown near the city of Montepulciano in Southern Tuscany. Montepulciano D' Abruzzo is produced in the region of Abruzzi located in South central Italy from the montepulciano grape. This red is quite a bit less expensive then it's cousin from Tuscany. For only seven bucks, the Terre Antiche could easily become your everyday table red. It is not a fruit bomb by any stretch. This is a nice dry little red that shows good bright cherry fruit with hints of raspberries and cranberries. There is good acid on this but it is nicely balanced and integrated with the fruit. The finish is pleasing and shows no bitterness. Only 12% alcohol, which is very refreshing these days since a lot of wines come out at over 14% this wine could be matched up well with a number of foods including spaghetti (of course) stew, pizza, roasted chicken, hamburgers a number of cheeses and many more. This is very versatile and delicious. A nice old country style red that is very friendly to the wallet. I believe there is an ample supply of this so if you do not see it at your store, I would ask for it if I were you.   88 points

View Article  COYOTE CANYON VINEYARDS ALBARINO 2008... $17.99
When you see Albarino on the label you automatically think Spain. I was surprised when Mike Andrews brought this out in his tasting room. He told me it was one of the most popular wines he had and sold a ton of it out of his shop. When he served it to me, it was quite cold so I had trouble extracting anything except sugar cane. I took one home, warmed it up and felt the magic of Mike Andrews. This has an incredible nose of tropical fruits... mangos, papaya, mandarin orange. The palate is definitely fruit forward with a sweetness that will make it a nice match with Thanksgiving fare. The sweetness is quite natural however, like freshly squeezed mandarin oranges blended with ripe peaches and nectarines. Can you imagine how good this will be with turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes and fruit salad! I am getting the shivers just thinking about it. Needless to say, this wine is also quite excellent solo. Do not miss out on a chance to try this superb Washington Albarino... If not now at least on the fourth Thursday of November.  90 points  ( Remember, do not drink this one too cold... you will lose a lot of the magic!)
View Article  2007 COYOTE CANYON WINERY CABERNET SAUVIGNON... COYOTE CANYON VINEYARDS, HORSE HEAVEN HILLS... $17.99

If you are not in the Coyote Canyon Wine Club, I would encourage you to become a member a.s.a.p. so that you can get your hands on some of this cab before it is all gone. Mike Andrews has hit a home run with this baby using  fruit from his stellar vineyards in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. A very classic cab that is silky and seductive. On the nose you get soft cedar, black raspberry and anise notes with maybe slight whiffs of blueberry. When it hits your palate you know right away that you are in for a treat! Round yet structured in the mouth with black fruit, dark cherries, raspberry, blueberries and hints of anise that expand in the mid-palate and melt seamlessly into a silky smooth long, long finish with hints of old world leather on the back end. This wine is like a favorite song that you love to hear over and over again and you play the lyrics in your mind as the day goes on. You will remember this one and you will get excited when you are getting ready to uncork yet another bottle. The price on this wine is ridunculous considering the quality of the juice, so snap up as much as you can in October before it is all gone.  94 points
