Valentine's Day

Please don't tell Roger Ebert how much I enjoyed Valentine's Day, which opened nationwide just in time for the holiday. This is what he had to say:

"Valentine's Day" is being marketed as a Date Movie. I think it's more of a First-Date Movie. If your date likes it, do not date that person again. And if you like it, there may not be a second date."

Sorry, Roger, but I enjoyed it quite a bit and there is a good chance I'll see another film with the same person I went with. It was a large audience Saturday night at the Palace Theatre and others were enjoying it as much as me. With a star studded cast including Jennifer Garner, Ashton Kutcher, Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah, Julia Roberts, Patrick Dempsey, Anne Hathaway, Shirley McLaine, Hector Elizondo and others whose names escape me at the moment, there is never a dull moment on this particular February 14th. It is reminiscent of Love,Actually ,the British film from 2003. I think Roger was more enthusiastic about that film. Valentine's Day has a very similar story line, set in Los Angeles instead of London. The stories intertwine; as we follow a florist making deliveries on February 14th. Of course, everyone is beautiful and the weather is perfect, so it is a bit like a modern day fairy tale. There are some great shots of LA landmarks and quite a few good laughs. I especially enjoyed the longtime married couple played by Shirley McLaine and Hector Elizondo. Valentine's Day will be playing at the Palace at least through the February 25th. It's not a definite must-see on the big screen, but not a bad way to spend a couple of hours pleasantly.

"Stan The Wine Man"

I have to admit that not only have I not seen this movie, I have until Molly’s review had no desire to see it. Like the guys say... It looks like a chick flick. That being said, it appears Bridgett and I will have to check this movie out. What wine would go well with a star studded movie about love and lives? Well, this movie seems fun and entertaining with a light-hearted theme. How about Promiscuous Red! This is a new item I brought into the store not only for it’s cute name but also because it’s light and fruity with good flavors that are not complex but enjoyable. This wine is only eleven bucks, raspberries come through on the nose followed by jammy raspberry and ripe plum notes on silky tannins that go down easy. And the name comes with a subliminal message that may pay off after the movie. At this price you can afford to buy two bottles for the next date with the same person. Sorry Roger.

First of all, I must apologize for neglecting my movie reviewing responsibilities. For the past six weeks, I've been preoccupied with moving and getting settled in my new home. Movie watching has not been my highest priority. In fact, I may be one of the only people on the island who didn't go see Avatar when it was here. I did hear many rave about how amazing it was, and I have to admit I was curious, yet I never did find the time to see it.

On New Year's Eve, my date and I went to see Sherlock Holmes. I am a big fan of both Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. From the previews I had seen, I knew it wasn't a typical period piece. In fact, the nonstop action seemed really out of place for a story set in 1891; though typical of a Guy Ritchie film. I did enjoy the story that happened between the action scenes; there were just too many action scenes for my taste. I suspect we will see at least one and maybe more sequels to this film.

More recently, I've seen It's Complicated, a romantic comedy for those of a certain age. Even though this film was not a big hit with the critics, audiences everywhere loved it! I've heard several people talking about seeing it more than once. In fact, I'm planning on seeing it again, since I feel I must have missed some of the dialogue because I was laughing so hard. Meryl Streep is absolutely wonderful in the role of a Jane, woman having an affair with her ex-husband Jake, played by Alec Baldwin. Steve Martin is Adam, a newly divorced architect in charge of the remodel of Jane's house. There is a spark of interest between those two, but it gets complicated when Jane is sneaking around seeing her ex, who is married to the other woman he left her for. John Krasinski offers comic relief as Harley, Jane's future son in law. Don't dismiss this film as a chick flick; men enjoy it just as much as women. It's fun and entertaining; what more can you ask for in a movie?

I'm still digesting Up in the Air, which was somewhat disturbing to me. It was written and directed by Jason Reitman, whose previous movies are Juno, which I loved; and Thank You for Smoking. Up in the Air has George Clooney flying around the country firing people when companies need to downsize. Reitman used people who had been let go recently for the firing scenes so the emotions we see are very real. George Clooney is always a pleasure to watch, the writing is smart and the subject matter is thought provoking. I saw it a week ago, and I'm still chewing on it. Don't go in expecting lots of laughs. The screenplay won a Golden Globe Award for the 32 year old Reitman, who is obviously off to a good start in the movie biz.

This week at the Palace is Invictus, with Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as the captain of the the Springboks, South Africa's national rugby team. Clint Eastwood is the director and he is known for making fine movies. I haven't seen it yet, but I will.

That's it for now. Hope you get a chance to see some of these films!

View Article  HELD OVER BY POPULAR DEMAND... JULIE AND JULIA

Julie and Julia is a wonderful film that I would recommend to anyone, despite the lack of explosions, foul language and car chases. It really is just a charming story based on the lives of two women, Julia Child and Julie Powell.
We all know who Julia Child is, the woman who brought French cooking to American kitchens via her massive tome Mastering the Art of French Cooking. Julie Powell is the woman who decided in 2002 to cook all 524 recipes, in 365 days, and write about it on her blog, The Julie/Julia Project. The film moves seamlessly between Julia's life in Paris, circa late fifties,  and Julie cooking away in a tiny kitchen in her Queens, NY apartment located over a pizza parlor. Meryl Streep is brilliant as Julia, a lively American woman who almost accidently becomes the beloved icon of fine cooking. She really is just a bored housewife looking for something to keep her busy when she enrolls at Paris cooking school Le Cordon Bleu. When her husband asks what it is she likes to do, Julia replies "Eat. And I'm so good at it."
Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, is an almost 30 year old who feels her life so far has amounted to nothing when she decides to challenge herself to cooking every recipe in Child's famous French cookbook. She works all day in a government office and then comes home to create another meal of fine French cooking. She blogs about her experiences, and slowly gains a fan base and finally the attention of NY Times food critic, Amanda Hesser, who comes over for dinner one evening. Because of the media attention, Julie is offered a book deal, which this film is based on.
The supporting cast includes Stanley Tucci as Julia's husband Paul, who works for the State Department. Chris Messina plays Eric Powell, the supportive husband of Julie. The screenplay was written by Nora Ephron, who also directed.
I've seen this film twice and both times the audience applauded enthusiastically as the credits rolled. I always like it when that happens. It's fun to see a movie with lots of people who are enjoying the experience. That's why I will always prefer going to the movie theatre. Julie and Julia will be playing at the Palace Theatre in Friday Harbor through Thursday, September 17th. So make a date and treat yourself to a fun night at the movies.
MOLLY'S RATING: 96

I believe that just about everyone I talked to about this movie agree with Molly’s assessment. Inspired by the content of this movie I have decided to recommend a French wine. (Really. Go figure.) In fact, because there are two main characters, I will recommend a French red and a French white.
For the red, I have stumbled upon a fantastic little gem from the Corbieres appellation, Chateau de Vaugelas. 35% syrah, 30% grenache, 30% carignan and 5% mouvedre this wine has wonderful fresh acidity with nice brambleberry notes on the palate and hits of mocha in the mid-palate and finish. The tannins are solid and very approachable now and the finish is clean and pleasant. A great match with grilled meats or ripe cheese. This wine is a super deal at $11.99... You can afford to buy a couple of bottles after the movie.

The white is one of my personal favorite white Bordeaux. Chateau Ducasse which is a blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc. Good acidity and fresh minerality, this white shows refreshing citrus notes on a clean palate which linger in your mouth for some time. This white is wonderful solo but would be a great match with shellfish or pasta with a white sauce. This baby will not bust your budget at $15,99.
There you go.... Hopefully you were inspired by the movie to open that French cookbook, whip up some fantastic food and enjoy some fine wine.    Stan

In the spirit of this website, Molly will use the 100 point scoring system to rate the movies and videos she reviews. 95-100 means this is a classic that should not be missed. 89-94, a very good movie that is worth the money to see. 84-88... take it or leave it. Below 84 means this movie is not only worth skipping, it is a waste of your money. Let's see how Molly rates...

THE UGLY TRUTH

Sometimes I go to a movie not expecting much.  That was the case with The Ugly Truth, starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler.  I hadn't seen any trailers, so didn't even know what the story line was.  If nothing else, it would give me about 2 hours in an air-conditioned auditorium on a hot summer evening.

This is a raunchier than usual romantic comedy, written to appeal to both genders.  I guess that would make it the perfect date movie, though I wouldn't’t recommend this film for a first date.  The audience I saw it with was mostly women, with a handful of men.  It definitely earned the “R” rating with language I was surprised to hear.  You won’t see me dropping kids off to see this.

Abby (Heigl) is the producer of a Sacramento morning talk show with not so good ratings.  In a desperate attempt to increase the numbers, her boss hires local cable access host Mike Chadway (Butler) to air his show “The Ugly Truth” as a segment on Abby’s show.  Mike is a rough around the edges throwback who makes Neanderthals seem enlightened.  Much to Abby’s dismay, her audience loves him and the ratings soar.  Mike offers his unique romantic advice to help Abby land the handsome doctor who just moved in next door.  Low brow laughs ensue; Abby and Mike take a business trip together and the rest isn't hard to figure out.

This is the first time I’ve seen Gerard Butler in a film and I have to say, he is hot, hot, hot.  I look forward to seeing more of him in something better.  I’m sure fans of Katherine Heigl will be forgiving and go see her next film.  And we know there will always be romantic comedies.

MOLLY'S RATING:  78 points.

Stan's wine recommendation for after this movie...

Wow, Molly was not high on this flick, except for Gerard Butler of course. So what should we imbibe after such a poorly done romantic comedy? A bottle of 2007 Coyote Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a sexy cab (Like Gerard) with silky smooth seductive tannins. This cab shows opulent fruit on the palate with notes of dark cherry, boysenberry, plum and mocha. The finish is long and memorable, unlike the aforementioned film. There is nothing like following up a bad flick with a good bottle of wine. At $17.99 it is a better value then the movie and it will help you enjoy the rest of the evening and help take your girlfriend or wife's mind off of Gerard (hot, hot, hot) Butler!!
